Livable & Accessible Housing

Australian’s life expectancy continues to increase and our ability to live longer is placing great pressure on the health care sector. In response to the challenging needs of the community, the Australian Government are implementing new codes for housing design – such as Livable Housing and Accessible Housing guidelines.

Livable & Accessible Housing Design enriches the quality of life for many but specifically for people with disabilities, the elderly, trauma or sport injuries, pregnant mothers etc.

As a result, Livable Housing Guidelines were developed in 2010 by Government, industry and community groups to provide assurance that a home is easier to access, navigate and live in, as well more cost effective to adapt when life’s circumstances change.

Most people can expect temporary or permanent variations in their physical capabilities in their life due to injury, illness or age and greater accessibility is easily achieved if included at design stage.

These new guidelines provide an outline for thoughtful & practical design to meet the changing requirements of occupants over their lifetime, affording the opportunity to maintain self-independence.

Accessible housing is designed to meet the needs of people requiring a higher level of access and is typically designed and built with a person’s specific requirements in mind.

The Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) Design Standard has been developed through extensive consultation across government, private sector, the housing industry, and disability organisations.

It sets out detailed design requirements that will be incorporated into newly built Specialist Disability Accommodation, seeking enrolment under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

There are four categories of Specialist Disability Accommodation design which are set out in the SDA Rules:

  • Improved Livability
  • Robust
  • Fully Accessible
  • High Physical Support.

A well-designed house in the right location can allow for more independent living arrangements, increased community connection and access to informal supports.

If you are eligible, the NDIS funds the cost of your housing through SDA payments to an SDA provider.

Taylor’d Distinction are passionate about helping you achieve a Livable or Accessible home.
